Entry Description

A public dedication ceremony for an Indiana state historical marker, commemorating St. Vincent’s Hospital, opened in 1913, is scheduled for Friday, April 26, 2013. The marker will be dedicated at 10:00 A.M. (EDT) at the Illinois-Fall Creek Center, 2535 N. Capitol Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana.

The text follows for the state marker entitled “St. Vincent’s Hospital”:

The Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul opened its 325-room state-of-the-art hospital here on February 3, 1913, its third location in Indianapolis since 1881. Facilities and services were improved and expanded to include a nursing school and residence hall by 1927 and a 35-bed children’s unit in 1939. Philanthropic Hospital Guild was organized in 1933. Daughters of Charity moved to new residence on grounds in 1960 to make room for 65 additional patient beds in 1962. Coronary unit added in 1966. Hospital growth and building limitations forced 1974 move to 86th Street site. Facilities here used for subsidized housing until 2003; purchased by Ivy Tech Community College 2006. Much of original 1913 brick façade remains.

The public is invited to attend the dedication ceremony for this Indiana historical marker which will be located in front of the former hospital at Capitol and Fall Creek Avenues. The program is being hosted by       St.Vincent Health and Ivy Tech Community College. A reception will follow the ceremony.

State historical markers commemorate significant individuals, organizations, places, and events in Indiana history. These markers help communities throughout the state promote, preserve, and present their history for the education and enjoyment of residents and tourists of all ages. For more than 95 years the Indiana Historical Bureau, an agency of the State of Indiana, has been marking Indiana history.  Since 1946, the marker format has been the large roadside marker, which has the familiar dark blue background with gold lettering and the outline of the state of Indiana at the top. There are approximately 500 of these markers across the state.

For more information about this marker, the Indiana Historical Marker Program, and other resources about Indiana, visit the Indiana Historical Bureau’s website at or call 317-232-6276. For more information about the dedication ceremony, contact Johnny Smith, St.Vincent Health, 317-538-2209, pager 317-338-3550 #8225.
