Hoosier farmers recognized for achievements

STATEHOUSE – State Representative P. Eric Turner (R-Cicero) congratulates the Crawford-Sinclair, Paul and Kelsay families for receiving Hoosier Homestead Awards. The awards were presented today by Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann and Agriculture Director Gina Sheets at the Indiana Statehouse.

The Hoosier Homestead Award Program recognizes families with farms that have been owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more.

Crawford Farms, located in Atlanta, Ind., has been owned and operated since 1834, expanding in 1844, by the Crawford-Sinclair families. They received the Sesquicentennial Award for over 150 years of service to Indiana’s agriculture industry.

The Paul family farm, located in Tipton, has been in operation since 1910. They will be receiving the Centennial Award.

Lastly, the Kelsay family farm, located in Fairmount, began in 1904.  They will also be receiving the Centennial Award.

“These families have dedicated their lives, spanning generations, to feed Hoosiers and tend to the land,” said Rep. Turner. “The strength of Indiana’s farming community embodies the Hoosier spirit and what it takes to run a successful operation for so long.”

The program began in 1976 to acknowledge the contributions these families have made to Indiana agriculture. More than 5,000 farms have been recognized since the program was established.

“I commend the hard work and commitment the Crawford-Sinclair, Paul and Kelsay families have shown to Indiana, and I wish them another 100 years of bountiful harvests,” said Rep. Turner.

Two awards ceremonies are held each year, in the spring and summer, to commemorate the achievements of the many outstanding Hoosier farmers across the state.
