Agriculture Appreciation Month Kicks Off!
Governor Mike Pence has declared March Agriculture Appreciation Month in Indiana.
The Hoosier celebration is an extension of National Ag Day, March 19.

Tuesday, March 5

11:30a.m. Indiana’s Family of Farmers (IFoF) Statehouse Reception
Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann, secretary of agriculture and rural development, will kick off the celebration and will be recognizing the winners of the 2013 Ag Essay Contest. This Ag Appreciation Month luncheon reception will take place in the Statehouse North Atrium for legislators and staff. Cameron Mann, Indiana FFA state president, is reading the official governor’s proclamation.

2013 Ag Essay Contest: “Our Food, Our Farmers”
More than 500 entered the 2013 Ag Essay Contest, sponsored by IFoF and Indiana Humanities and six will be recognized during the March 5 presentation. For the 2013 competition, the same question was asked of all three grade levels:
• Describe how Indiana farmers nourish 1) our families, 2) our animals, and 3) our earth (soil). Please provide an example from each of the three areas.

10:30 a.m. Food Trucks Celebrate Agriculture Appreciation Month
Ten food trucks will serve from 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. outside the Statehouse on Senate Avenue to join in the celebration. The public is encouraged to come out and support these local businesses and learn more about Indiana agriculture. All were featured regularly at the Statehouse Market, a State Personnel Department wellness initiative. Indiana FFA members will also interact with the public and Flyte the Owl, the official mascot of the National FFA Organization, will help entertain the crowd.

9:30 a.m. State Soil Conservation Board Meeting
The SSCB administers the Clean Water Indiana Fund, a water quality-related erosion and sediment reduction program and also provides guidance and coordination to the state’s 92 Soil and Water Conservation Districts as they provide local leadership in the protection of Indiana's soil and water resources.

11:30 a.m. Workshop on Nutrient Management Challenges and Solutions
ISDA in partnership with Purdue University and Notre Dame will be hosting a workshop for farmers and landowners to address current challenges and latest research from the day’s speakers. For more information or to register go to
