Rep. Karickhoff: Safer roads for all drivers
STATEHOUSE – House Bill (HB) 1523 authored by State Representative Milo Smith (R-Columbus) and co-authored by Rep. Mike Karickhoff (R-Kokomo) passed out of the House Monday with a 75-18 vote.
HB 1523 repeals the term “motorized bike,” replacing it with the more commonly used “moped,” and allows the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) to adopt rules concerning the registration for mopeds. It also updates many traffic laws regarding mopeds in order to maintain a safe driving atmosphere for everyone on the road.
“Mopeds are becoming a common mode of transportation on our roadways,” said Rep. Karickhoff. “Ensuring that drivers of all vehicles are aware of each other and are conscious of the updated traffic laws will help keep everyone safe.”
HB 1523 provides that a moped operated on a highway must be titled and registered with the BMV. It requires that the operator of a moped have a driver’s license or an identification card with a moped endorsement and pay the necessary fees for the issuance and renewal of an endorsement. An endorsement may be issued after one’s driver’s license has been suspended or revoked.
The American Bikers Aimed Toward Education (ABATE) also supported this bill.
“There were 24 deaths caused by moped-related traffic accidents in Indiana in 2012,” said Rep. Karickhoff. “This bill implements the necessary steps to clarify law and keep our Hoosiers safe.”
HB 1523 will now move to the Senate for further debate and discussion. To stay up-to-date with this bill or any other please visit www.in.gov/legsislature.
