[INDOT] I-65 NB, I-70 EB Closed in Downtown Indy until Bridge Beam is Repaired

I-65 Northbound, I-70 Eastbound to Remain Closed until Bridge Beam is Repaired

 

INDIANAPOLIS – I-65 northbound and I-70 eastbound will remain closed at the South Split downtown until repairs can be made to a steel bridge beam. This afternoon an oversize vehicle struck the Virginia Avenue bridge, damaging one of its steel beams.

 

Bridge repair experts with INDOT and the private sector are considering all options to safely reopen the interstate as soon as possible, but a timeline is not known. I-70 eastbound traffic is being diverted to I-65 southbound, and I-65 northbound traffic is being diverted to I-70 westbound. Dynamic message signs are directing through traffic on I-65 northbound and I-70 eastbound to follow the I-465 loop around Indianapolis as a detour.

 

Virginia Avenue remains open across the bridge as the damaged beam does not support vehicular traffic. I-65 southbound and I-70 westbound also remain open. All vehicles traveling state highways over 13 and a half feet in height are required to obtain a permit through the Indiana Department of Revenue.
