Entry Description STATEHOUSE (Feb. 21, 2013) – Legislation authored by State Sen. Scott Schneider (R-Indianapolis) suspending Indiana’s implementation of Common Core State Standards today passed the Senate 38-11.
Senate Bill 193 places a halt on the implementation of Common Core until the Indiana State Board of Education holds a series of public hearings across the state to review the educational standards.
“The case against Common Core is strong,” Schneider said. “Parents and teachers statewide see the need to reevaluate what we are doing. This is no longer a state-led initiative. It has become a tool for the federal government when it attached funding to force states to adopt Common Core. I am pleased parents and teachers will now be given an opportunity to learn more about this unprecedented loss of local control and add their voice to the discussion."
Also under SB 193, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) will conduct an analysis of the cost associated with implementing the Common Core State Standards.
“We need to know what Indiana will be required to pay for implementing these new nationwide standards,” Schneider said. “The OMB’s analysis will shed light on the potential expenses related to Common Core.”
The bill will now move to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
