Rep. Frizzell: Easier access to physical therapy
STATEHOUSE – House Bill (HB) 1034 authored by State Representative David Frizzell (R-Indianapolis) and co-authored by Reps. Timothy Brown (R-Crawfordsville), Robert Morris (R-Fort Wayne) and Matt Ubelhor (R-Bloomfield) passed through the Indiana House of Representatives today with an 80-18 vote.
HB 1034 allows a physical therapist to evaluate and treat a patient without a referral by their general physician or chiropractor for 30 days or less. If the patient requires physical therapy for more than 30 days, then the physical therapist must obtain a referral.
“Indiana is the last state to give patients some form of direct access to a physical therapist,” said Rep. Frizzell. “This favors the patient by eliminating unnecessary referrals, lowering costs and allowing patients to recover more quickly.”
Currently, physical therapy patients must contact their doctor and have them provide a referral in order to receive physical therapy. HB 1034 would give a patient a more direct role in their healthcare decisions, effectively lowering healthcare costs and potentially expanding the physical therapy job market in Indiana.
“Physical therapists have sufficient knowledge and experience to know when their form of treatment is best for the patient,” said Rep. Frizzell. “They can recognize when their services are the patient’s best option and will ensure that the patient gets the care they need.”
HB 1034 will move to the Senate for further discussion and debate. To stay up-to-date on this bill and any other piece of legislation in the General Assembly, visit www.in.gov/legislative.
