| [SUPREME] 78 Indiana Counties Now Offer Marriage License Applications Online |

Entry Description Applying for a marriage license is becoming easier than ever in many Indiana counties thanks to an Indiana Supreme Court initiative. Online marriage license applications are now available in 78 counties, including most recently Marion County. The online application can be found at courts.IN.gov/marriage.
Couples can enter basic information online from home or the office instead of having to answer questions in person at Clerk’s offices around the state. Then, applicants can arrive at the Clerk’s office to provide required identification and simply pay the fee. Since the application has already been completed online, couples no longer have to fill out a form by hand. Also, court staff does not have to enter data. A marriage license is then provided in just minutes for use on the couple’s wedding day.
The 78 participating counties are using a system developed by the Supreme Court Division of State Court Administration Judicial Technology and Automation Committee (JTAC). JTAC Chair and Supreme Court Justice Mark Massa said, “Automating the marriage license application process is another in a long line of convenience and efficiency improvements brought to the courts and administrative agencies by our ongoing JTAC efforts. Whether it’s the direct transmission of traffic tickets from the side of the road to the BMV, a statewide protective order registry that police can access in real time, or a modern computer case management system for our trial courts and clerks, these upgrades enhance efficiency, public safety and convenience for millions of Hoosiers. We are proud to announce this latest collaborative achievement.”
The project is a joint collaboration with the Indiana State Department of Health and the Indiana Circuit Court Clerk’s Association. Marshall County Clerk and President of Clerk’s Association, Julie Fox said “It places part of the data entry responsibilities into the hands of the applicant and allows counties access to view all marriage license records across the State of Indiana.”
In addition to saving time for both couples and clerk staff, the program increases the accuracy of the marriage data, reduces paperwork, and eliminates redundant data entry by the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) Vital Records Department because counties no longer need to send hard copy marriage records by mail to ISDH. “This system has greatly reduced the amount of data entry necessary for the Office of Vital Records,” said Indiana State Registrar David Baize. “We continue to work with our partners to try to get the remaining counties on board with the system in order to continue the streamlining efforts and the benefits that it provides.”
The system is available to Indiana counties as part of the Supreme Court’s marriage license e-file program at no cost to the public. 115,000 applications have been processed statewide since the system was developed in April 2007.
