Entry Description INDIANAPOLIS—The General Assembly recently considered a bill co-authored by State Senator Jim Arnold (D-LaPorte) to make buyers aware of vehicles previously used as mobile meth labs.
Senate Bill (SB) 277 would require sales persons who have knowledge of a vehicle’s use in methamphetamine production to disclose that information in writing prior to the sale. Those who are unaware of this will not be held responsible.
“The manufacturing of this drug outside of homes is becoming more and more common,” said Sen. Arnold. “We need to protect consumers from being exposed to this hazardous substance any way we can.”
SB 277 provides that vehicle salespersons who fail to supply this information may face civil action, remediation or reimbursement of costs. The court could require dealers to decontaminate the vehicle, as well as award purchases of up to $10,000 in damage compensation.
The bill passed out of the Senate Committee on Elections and Civil Law by a vote of 6-2, and passed the full Senate by a vote of 47-1 before moving to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
Sen. Arnold represents District 8 in the Indiana State Senate which encompasses the majority of La Porte County including the City of LaPorte and the eastern part of Michigan City. It also includes western St. Joseph County and Davis, Oregon, Washington, Center and Jackson townships in Starke County.
