[DNR] Fort Harrison SP will celebrate heroic Four Chaplains, Feb. 3

The Museum of 20th Century Warfare and the staff at Fort Harrison State Park will celebrate the lives of the Four Chaplains on the 70th anniversary of their deaths on Feb. 3.

The event is at 2 p.m. in the chapel at the Museum of 20th Century Warfare at Fort Harrison State Park.

The Four Chaplains were U.S. Army officer-chaplains on board the USAT Dorchester that was torpedoed and sunk on Feb. 3, 1943, during World War II. The four chaplains died at sea in freezing water after they offered their life jackets to save the lives of other soldiers as the ship sank.

One of the chaplains, Father John Washington, had been stationed at Fort Harrison in May 1942 as the Chief of Chaplains at the onset of the war.

Major R. Romans, Indiana Guard Reserve, will be conducting the 30-minute talk. Romans is the chaplain for the Museum of 20th Century Warfare and one of many volunteer military re-enactors that help bring history to life through the museum.

The program is free after the normal entrance fee of $5 per in-state vehicle and $7 per out-of-state vehicle.

Fort Harrison State Park is at the corner of 59th and Post Road in greater Indianapolis. The Museum of 20th Century Warfare is in Building 711 in Fort Harrison State Park and is open Thursdays through Sundays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the winter. Visiting the museum is free.
