Entry Description

Session as a freshman

There has been a whirlwind of activity since being elected to serve as the State Representative for our community on November 6. The process of learning all of the rules and procedures that come with this new job has been an adventure, but I have enjoyed every minute of it. I am honored to be in this position, and I have truly appreciated getting to know so many of you over the last year as I traveled the district.

The General Assembly's first session day is January 7th, and over the next four months, we will debate the issues that matter most to Hoosiers and their families. Most importantly, we will pass a two-year, balanced budget that is focused on growing our state’s economy for years to come. Indiana’s fiscal health is one of the best in the nation, and we will continue to find innovative ways to provide more efficient services and cut wasteful spending.

Session committees were set in November by the Speaker of the House, Brian Bosma. I serve as the Vice Chairman of the Natural Resources Committee and also serve as a member of the Education Committee, Roads and Transportation Committee as well as the Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee.

One of the first steps I took as a new member after being sworn in was filing legislation. Bill filing is the process of writing and submitting bills to the Legislative Service Agency, where the legal language for the bills is drafted. Bills are drafted by Friday, December 14, in order for everything to be ready for the start of session. The bill filing deadline is January 14, where the bills then be assigned to committees and go through the legislative process.

All of the procedures can be a little overwhelming at times, fortunately, I have my wonderful wife, Jody, at my side helping to keep my head on straight as I begin this new part of my life. Before session began, I was blessed to be around all of my family and friends for Christmas and the New Year, and I will be forever thankful for their support in this endeavor.

As a freshman legislator, I will spend a lot of my time learning how things operate in the General Assembly this session, but no matter my legislative experience, representing my district with integrity and serving my constituents openly will be my priority. I see this position as a partnership between you and me, and together, we can help build a better future for Indiana. If you ever have any questions or concerns please contact me by phone at (800) 382-9841 or by email at h74@in.gov.

I will always vote with our community in mind and strive to do what is best for Hoosiers. Indiana is our state, and together, we will continue to cultivate an environment where our children can grow and raise families of their own for generations to come.
