Entry Description

STATEHOUSE – Students from Brown County Junior High School were honored at the Statehouse yesterday with a resolution authored by State Representative Eric Koch (R-Bedford). The school’s group, “We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution Team,” was recognized in House Concurrent Resolution 10 for their promotion of civic responsibility and their victory in the statewide We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution Team competition.

On December 17, 2012, Brown County Junior High School’s We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution team, led by teacher Michael Potts, defeated 11 other schools from around the state to secure the title of We the People Middle School State Champion for the third consecutive year.

After extensively studying American History, constitutional philosophy, current events and numerous court cases, the semester ends at the We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution state finals, where the students testify in mock congressional hearings before panels of volunteer judges from the legal community while competing against other schools throughout Indiana.

“We can be proud that Indiana will be represented by such a talented group of students,” said Rep. Koch in presenting to the resolution to the House of Representatives.

Brown County Junior High School’s state championship has earned the school a chance to represent the community and the state of Indiana by competing at a national level.

Involvement with the We the People competition allows students to develop a greater understanding of democratic principles and prepares Indiana youth for a future that will encourage their knowledge of and participation in Indiana’s democratic system of government. House Concurrent Resolution 10 will be sponsored in the Senate by State Senator Brent Steele.
