Bipartisan Support to Feed Indiana’s Hungry

The General Assembly is fighting back against Hoosier Hunger.  Currently one in six Hoosiers are food insecure, meaning there are over a million people in Indiana who do not know where their next meal will come from. This is far too many people who don’t have stability from a basic necessity. We can do more to help.

In a collaborative effort, all of the caucuses have banned together to fight against Hoosier Hunger. Feeding Indiana’s Hungry is a bipartisan effort to raise awareness and support for local food banks. Food banks and churches continually put these causes on their backs and find solutions in every nook and cranny to feed the hungry and underprivileged. The holiday season around Thanksgiving and Christmas tends to bring in the most food donations – and is a wonderful time to give – but a year-around effort is needed.

The food banks of Feeding Indiana’s Hungry distributed 73.7 million pounds of food in 2012: 21 percent came from federal commodities, 67 percent donated and 12 percent purchased. Indiana has 11 regional food banks, each serving a specific geographic area, much like a legislative district. Hoosier food banks provide food to more than 1700 local church pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, day cares and other nonprofits in those areas.

With one out of six Hoosiers at risk of going hungry, it is vital we continue to fight the good fight.  Last year, Feeding Indiana’s Hungry was able to provide 73.7 million pounds of food to Hoosiers, but there are still more than 1 million Hoosiers who are food insecure.  No one should have to choose between paying for food or their utility bills. It is time to come together and effectively utilize our resources.

There are many places throughout Spencer, Perry, Crawford, Dubois and Orange counties to make donations. To find a food pantry near you please visit

We will be holding an event at the Statehouse kicking off Hunger Awareness Day on February 18th from 10:00am to 2:00pm. You can make a monetary donation through Feeding Indiana’s Hungry website at

I am proud to represent our community because we always have each other’s backs. Many of you reach out to those in need on a consistent basis, truly impacting their lives and leading by example. With the utmost sincerity, thank you for all you do and making our community a better place to live.
