Aspiring to serve our prospering community

Progress at the Statehouse continues to move at a rapid pace following Governor Pence’s State of the State address last week.  As legislators, we are tasked with providing the guidelines to improving our state and well-being, and we are working to fully and accurately address the issues brought forth by our constituents.

Governor Pence discussed many issues that resonated with many of us at the Statehouse.  He said that “…we have to do better and doing better starts with the right priorities.  It starts by adopting a roadmap that says ‘yes’ to our future and believes in the unlimited potential of our people.” I believe Governor Pence aptly expressed a strong feeling shared by the General Assembly.  We believe in the boundless potential that Hoosiers are capable of reaching with the right leadership and support.

In order to serve our community to the best of my availability, it is vital that I get input from our district.  When I know your main concerns, I am able to proceed with bills that will best serve our community.  Many of your issues have been heard and will be addressed during the weeks of session ahead.

The committees I serve on – Environmental Affairs, Public Health and Agriculture and Rural Development – are continuing to hear House Bills that may potentially become law.  One bill in particular, House Bill (HB) 1099 authored by Rep. Steve Davisson (R-Salem) and co-authored by members from both parties, addresses the clearance that Physician Assistants have regarding filling certain prescriptions.  The bill was passed through the Public Health Committee to the House floor and was sent to the Senate with a unanimous vote of support.

Applicable physician assistants should be able to help patients – under the appropriate supervision – in times that a medical doctor is not essential.  The passing of this bill will allow for timely and cost-efficient office visits for patients. These individuals are trained to address these situations and should be able to perform such duties.

I remain focused on the important issues at hand, but an open dialogue is imperative to good public policy. I will continue pursuing legislation that is in the best interest of our community and, as always, I encourage you to contact me concerning any issues or questions you have this session.  I am available by email at or by telephone at (317) 234-2993.

State Rep. Don Lehe serves as Chairman of the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee. He also serves on the Environmental Affairs Committee and the Public Health Committee.  Rep. Lehe represents portions of White, Call, Carroll, Clinton and Tippecanoe Counties.
