Inspiring Beginnings for the 2013 Legislative Session

Transitioning to new districts, inaugurating a new governor, organizing committees with new chairmen—changes at the Indiana Statehouse are happening quickly.  Now that the 2013 Indiana legislative session is underway, I would like to take a moment to share with you my goals and priorities for the months ahead.

Every 10 years, districts are changed based on the most current U.S. Census data in order to accommodate population shifts. Our district changed drastically with the latest numbers, resulting in House District 25 covering parts of White, Cass, Carroll, Clinton and Tippecanoe counties. I am honored to serve you at the Statehouse, and I look forward to hearing from your thoughts, comments and concerns throughout my tenure.

While in Indianapolis for the legislative session, I will serve as the chairman of the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee, something I have always been passionate about. As a lifelong farmer and resident of a primarily rural area, presiding as the chairman of this committee is an honor.  The agriculture industry is a major economic driver in Indiana exporting over $3.4 billion annually in primary commodities and processed food; 11 percent of the exports for the entire country.

In 2011, Indiana ranked fourth and fifth in the nation for soybean and corn farming respectively, leading to essential economic growth for our state.  I want to continue this progress by helping to grow Indiana’s agriculture industry and economic footprint.  In order to make this happen, I will work with my colleagues, farmers and agriculture experts to ensure any policy changes best serve all Hoosiers.

I will also be focused on crafting our state’s next two-year budget. Throughout session, the General Assembly will work to provide a financial framework for our state that continues to put Indiana in the position to attract jobs, improve our education system, strengthen our infrastructure, protect the vulnerable and provide the framework for growth and prosperity. We can continue to accomplish these priorities by living within our means and eliminating wasteful spending. I look forward to working not only with my fellow members of the 118th General Assembly, but also with our community to set forth a precedent that will help lead House District 25 toward a brighter future.

As always, I encourage you to contact me concerning any issues or questions that may arise during the 2013 session.  I am available by email at or by telephone at (317) 234-2993.  I am honored to be representing the Hoosiers of House District 25 and look forward to upholding the standards set by our community.

State Rep. Don Lehe serves as Chairman of the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee. He also serves on the Environmental Affairs Committee and the Public Health Committee.  Rep. Lehe represents portions of White, Call, Carroll, Clinton and Tippecanoe Counties.
