[ATG] Monserrate Shirley agrees to temporary suspension of her nursing license
Start Date: 1/16/2013 All Day
End Date: 1/16/2013
Entry Description

INDIANAPOLIS – Attorney General Greg Zoeller said today Monserrate Shirley agreed to the emergency suspension of her nursing license pending the outcome of her criminal trial.

Shirley is a registered nurse accused of causing a gas explosion in her Indianapolis home to collect insurance money. Last week, Zoeller’s office filed a petition to temporarily suspend her license with the Indiana State Board of Nursing.

“The board will consider and vote on this agreed summary suspension this week,” Zoeller said. “The outcome of the criminal proceedings will determine whether our office moves forward with filing a formal licensing complaint against Monserrate Shirley.”

The board is scheduled to begin hearings at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday in the Indiana Government Center South auditorium. For a copy of the agenda visit http://www.in.gov/pla/files/Nursing_Board_Agenda-January_2013.pdf.

In November, an explosion occurred at Shirley’s home destroying the residence and nearby houses – totaling about $4 million in damages. The explosion resulted in the death of two people and caused physical injury to several neighbors.

On Dec. 20, Shirley was charged in Marion County with murder, conspiracy to commit arson and arson.

Zoeller said his office will work with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office and await the outcome of the criminal proceedings before determining whether a formal licensing complaint will be filed. If Shirley is found not guilty, she could petition the board to be removed from the summary suspension.
