[ATG] State board suspends licenses of two Indy barbershops, owner & employees
Start Date: 1/7/2013 All Day
End Date: 1/7/2013
Entry Description

INDIANAPOLIS – Two local barbershops, including the owner and two employees, received 90-day license suspensions today after an undercover criminal investigation revealed corrupt business operations.

Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller’s office recently filed petitions to suspend the licenses of Jonathan’s Barber Shop, Jonathan’s Barber Shop II, owner Jonathan Barker and employees Gordon Parker and Jomo Cole, Sr. As a result, the State Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners voted today to grant the suspensions.

In November of 2012, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) concluded a six-month investigation related to illegal activities at the barbershops and their adjoining businesses known as Refurb-A-Tronics – also owned by Barker. According to the Affidavit of Probable Cause, IMPD was able to place controlled buys of marijuana, cocaine, hydrocodone, heroin, firearms, pirated DVDs and CDs, and knock-off designer merchandise in and around the businesses. Also, it was determined Hoosier Works EBT cards were traded for services or merchandise.

“Evidence has shown these individuals and businesses to be a source of illegal activity which represents a clear and immediate danger to the public,” said Gabrielle Owens, Deputy Director of the Attorney General’s Licensing Enforcement and Homeowner Protection Unit. “These suspensions will keep the Respondents from performing licensed services while the state pursues filing its formal complaints.”

Owens said the suspensions give the Attorney General’s Office time to gather evidence and file formal complaints before the board. The board could then determine what disciplinary actions, if any, will be taken.

Barker, Cole and Parker also face pending criminal charges from the Marion County Prosecutor's Office.

Jonathan’s Barber Shop is located at 3939 N. Keystone Ave. and Jonathan’s Barbershop II is located at 6753 E. 38th St. in Indianapolis.
