End Date: 1/3/2013End Time: 11:59 PM
Entry Description
INDIANAPOLIS (January 3, 2013) - Wendy Knapp, the Indiana State Library's Associate Director for Statewide Library Services, was recently selected to attend the 2013 Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) Global Libraries Peer Learning Meeting to be held in Cape Town, South Africa this Spring. Wendy is just one of three state agency representatives to be honored with this opportunity. She will attend as a delegate of Chief Officers of State Library Agencies (COSLA) and will participate in forum discussions with other librarians from around the world.

“This is a great honor for Wendy and we're fortunate to have her representing COSLA and the State of Indiana at this important meeting of global library leaders," said Roberta L. Brooker, State Librarian of Indiana. "Wendy has been a valuable leader at the Indiana State Library for over seven years and her extensive knowledge of implementing statewide library services will surely be valued by meeting attendees."

The BMGF’s Global Libraries program supports efforts to supply and maintain free public access to computers and the Internet in ten countries around the world. According to the BMGF, in today’s digital age, quick and easy access to information and knowledge can transform the lives of individuals and strengthen communities. Yet, approximately 5 billion people—almost 90 percent of the world’s population—do not have access to computers connected to the Internet.

Wendy Knapp was promoted to Associate Director of Statewide Services for the Indiana State Library in August 2012. She received her MLS from Indiana University in 2002, and joined the State Library in 2005. Between 2005 and 2007, she served as the planning consultant and e-rate state coordinator for the Library Development Office. In 2007, she was promoted to head the newly-created Professional Development Office where she oversaw the implementation of the new administrative rule for certification and standards as well as created multiple professional development opportunities for Hoosier librarians. Prior to joining the State Library, Wendy worked at the Indianapolis Public Library and IUPUI University Library.

The Indiana State Library was established in 1825 to provide library services to Indiana’s state governmental officials and employees. Since that time, the responsibilities of the State Library have expanded to provide services to all citizens of Indiana. Just as the Library of Congress serves as the historical repository for our nation, the State Library is responsible for collecting and preserving all types of information and data about the state of Indiana.

Everyone is welcome to visit the State Library. Our professional staff is available to assist with research questions, offer expertise on a variety of subject matters, including genealogy, and provide general guidance and information about materials in the Library’s collections.
