Entry Description
INDIANAPOLIS (December 13, 2013) – The Friends of the Indiana State Archives are sponsoring the inaugural Christmas at the Capitol on December 13th with Governor Pence and the First Lady. Christmas at the Capitol is a holiday performance by students from nearly a dozen high schools and colleges across Indiana. The program begins at 5:00 pm on Friday, December 13th. The second day of music, originally scheduled for Saturday, December 14th, has been cancelled due to the inclement weather forecast.

Christmas at the Capitol is open to the public, refreshments will be available, and families are encouraged to attend. The State Constitutions will be on display in the Rotunda as will the newly-trimmed 2013 Christmas tree.

The program is being sponsored by Jim and Betsy Corridan and the Friends of the Indiana State Archives. State Archivist Jim Corridan brought the idea to Indiana after attending a similar event at the Maryland State Capitol last year.

“We hope to have hundreds of Hoosiers in the Capitol in December to celebrate the season and enjoy the people’s house in Indianapolis,” Corridan said. “We are so pleased to have Governor and Mrs. Pence joining us in the inaugural Christmas at the Capitol event.”

The event schedule is as follows:
5:00 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13
•    Governor and Mrs. Pence Welcome
•    Union Chapel Bible College
•    Logansport High School Swing Choir
•    Hamilton Southeastern Royal Edition
•    Oak Trace Elementary Treble Choir

Saturday, Dec. 14 - CANCELLED

About the Indiana State Capitol Building
The Indiana Statehouse houses the seats of Government for the State of Indiana. Completed in 1888, the Statehouse is home to all executive offices, the Indiana State Senate, the Indiana House of Representatives, and the Indiana State Supreme Court, among others. The four floors of the Statehouse also contain both the House and Senate Chambers. The original Statehouse, a 40-foot-square building in Corydon still stands today. As more roads were built and settlement moved northward in the 19th Century, a centrally located seat of government was needed. In January of 1821, a site was selected and the city of Indianapolis was founded. While the Statehouse location has remained fixed since 1835, the original structure no longer stands, having been replaced by the current building in 1888.

About the Friends of the Indiana State Archives
Organized in 1990, the Friends of the Indiana State Archives is a not-for-profit organization created to begin a “citizen effort to save Indiana History.” During its history, the Friends has worked to secure the restoration of the 1816 and 1851 State Constitutions, as well as the construction of a display case to house the Constitutions in the Statehouse Rotunda. Since 1991 the Friends Volunteers have contributed nearly 60,000 hours of time to the Indiana State Archives. This invaluable assistance has enabled the Indiana State Archives to process a myriad of important collections. Recent volunteer projects include indexing land purchase records from the Vincennes Land Office, naturalization records from numerous Indiana Counties, student records from the Indiana School for the Deaf, early admission books from Central State Hospital, and the records of Hoosier veterans from 19th and early 20th century wars.
