Hume honored by the Indiana Department of the American Legion
Start Date: 7/19/2013 All Day
End Date: 7/19/2013
Entry Description

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Department of the American Legion recently honored State Senator Lindel Hume (D-Princeton) with their Distinguished Public Service Award. The group, Indiana’s largest veterans service organization, thanked Sen. Hume for his service to veterans through the 2013 legislative session of the Indiana General Assembly.

“I am very honored to be recognized by the American Legion for my legislative work on behalf of Indiana’s veterans,” Hume said. “When presented with an opportunity to help Hoosier servicemen and women, I want to make sure that we do everything we can, and I hope that on every level veterans will be treated with the respect and gratitude that they deserve.”

Sen. Hume has been a leading advocate for veterans in the Indiana General Assembly. This year he authored Senate Enrolled Act (SEA) 290 allowing medically-trained military personnel to be certified as emergency medical providers. The act gives the Indiana Emergency Medical Services Commission the ability to issue licenses to military service applicants who have prior training in medical service fields and who pass testing requirements. In addition, veterans who need to complete additional training would be issued temporary licenses by the commission.

Sen. Hume co-authored SEA 177, which assists veterans in attending college after completion of their service. The act makes veterans eligible for in-state tuition rates in undergraduate courses within 12 months after their honorable discharge. Veterans will be required to provide proof of their Indiana residency through voter registration and driver’s license no later than one year after enrollment. Veterans who are unable to provide this information will be subject to tuition policies determined by the universities and will need to repay the in-state and out-of-state tuition difference. Veterans who enroll after the 12-month period or in graduate degree programs would also be subject to tuition policies.

SEA 564, co-authored by Sen. Hume, improves economic opportunities for veteran-owned small businesses (VOSB). The act allows VOSBs to participate in state purchases and receive a 15 percent price preference that is already available to small businesses in the state. The Indiana Department of Administration (IDOA) will be tasked with increasing contract opportunities for VOSBs in order to reach a state contract goal of three percent. The IDOA can also receive assistance from the Indiana Economic Development Corporation to compile a list of Indiana VOSBs, determine which purchases are consistent with the contract goal and simplify contract terms to increase VOSB opportunities.

The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. The nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization is led by Boonville native James E. Koutz ,is committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow servicemembers and veterans.

Hume was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives in 1974, and then elected to the State Senate in 1982. Hume serves as the Senate Democratic Whip and represents Senate District 48, which includes portions or all of Daviess, Dubois, Gibson, Greene, Knox, Martin, Orange and Pike counties.
