Broden appointed to new Child Services Oversight Committee
Start Date: 6/24/2013 All Day
End Date: 6/24/2013
Entry Description

INDIANAPOLIS –State Senator John Broden (D-South Bend) has been appointed to serve on the Child Services Oversight Committee. The committee was formed from recommendations made by a bipartisan panel reviewing the Department of Child Services (DCS) last year in the wake of a number of high profile child abuse cases across the state.

“This is the first step toward ensuring stronger accountability at DCS,” Sen. Broden said. “I am eager to work alongside other stakeholders to strengthen protections and make certain we are doing all we can to keep children in Indiana safe.”

The oversight committee will review agency performance data and work with the DCS ombudsman to make recommendations to improve child protection services. Lawmakers signed off on legislation this year creating the oversight committee as well as the Commission on Improving the Status of Children in Indiana. The commission is charged with reviewing legislation and working to streamline and standardize efforts made across agencies to improve child safety.

“DCS has a great deal of responsibility, and legislators want to know what exactly is happening with families under the state’s watch. By creating these committees we can improve department transparency and incorporate new changes to strengthen safeguards,” Sen. Broden added.

Sen. Broden has also been appointed to the Commission on Education, Judicial Technology Oversight Committee, Regional Campuses Study Committee, Regulatory Flexibility Committee and the Probate Code Study Commission. These appointments were made by Indiana Senate President Pro Tempore David Long (R-Fort Wayne) upon recommendation of Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane (D-Anderson).

The Indiana General Assembly annually convenes interim study committees and permanent commissions to conduct in-depth research and analysis of issues affecting the state. Recommendations from these committees are often the basis for future legislation.
