[ICPR] Re-dedication of Colonel Richard Owen Bust
Start Date: 6/10/2013Start Time: 12:00 PM
End Date: 6/10/2013End Time: 1:00 PM
Entry Description
INDIANAPOLIS (June 10, 2013) -- A ceremony at the Indiana Statehouse on Monday, June 10, at 12 noon will re-dedicate a magnificent bronze bust which 100 years ago brought together Civil War veterans from both sides. The bust was a gift to Indiana from Confederate soldiers in honor of Union Colonel Richard Owen.

Confederate soldiers were not in the habit of honoring officers of the Union Army, but these Confederates had been held at Camp Morton, a prisoner of war camp in Indianapolis during the Civil War. Owen, the Commandant of the camp, had been so kind and considerate of his prisoners that they remembered him 50 years later and gathered funds to create a memorial. The result is the handsome bust which was officially dedicated in June of 1913. The original ceremony was attended by more than 500 people, including many gray-bearded veterans in blue and gray.

The re-dedication ceremony will be hosted by Indiana State Senator Jim Merritt. Reenactors will represent soldiers from both the Union and the Confederacy. State Archivist Jim Corridan will display a 30-foot handwritten petition signed by hundreds of prisoners requesting that Colonel Owen be retained as Commandant of Camp Morton after the United States Army had issued orders for his transfer. Words of tribute from the 1913 dedication will be spoken anew, and music of the Civil War period will be provided by Nick Sacco on string bass.
