[r82] Student to State Legislator
Start Date: 1/10/2013 All Day
End Date: 1/10/2013
Entry Description

Beginning my career as a freshman lawmaker, I intend to listen, learn and communicate to my constituents as much as possible. The first week of session started off a bit slow with committees just starting to meet and bills continuing to be filed. There are many new things to learn and processes to adapt to.

In many ways, the limestone building during the first week of session has an air about it of a school. New books have turned into new bills, the interns have traded in their new school clothes for freshly pressed suits, and legislators continue to meet all of the ‘classmates’.

Actually, it was school that spurred my interest in state government altogether. Full of ideas, my dream was to positively impact students attending Purdue University Calumet. Knowing I could make a difference, I ran for student government president and was honored with a victory. After witnessing firsthand those ideas come to life and implemented, I fell in love with the lawmaking process.

As the youngest legislator, these memories of being president and going to class have now been traded with going to committees. My goal, when I was in academia was to pass my classes as one of the top students; here at the legislature my goals are similar. I want the state to score well, and be one of the top states in the nation.

This can be achieved by reinforcing our pro-business climate created by enacted legislation. That foundation, combined with the determination of hard working Hoosiers, has distinguished Indiana from other states, and I wish to continue that momentum.

Another goal of is to work to pass an honestly balanced budget, maintaining a healthy reserve by living within our state’s means.

Much like being class president, my overall goal remains the same; to truly make decisions in the best interest of who I represent. I found that the best way to do that is through effective communication.

Keeping that in mind, I encourage residents of House District 82 to contact me, my door is always open. I am accessible through email at h82@in.gov or by telephone at (317)-232-9643. As we build a relationship together, knowing what issues are important to you and your family allows me to represent you more effectively. I have high expectations for the 2013 legislative session, and I look forward to hearing from you.
