Vigo County---Acting on a tip and information gained through investigation, the US Marshal’s Service Fugitive Task Force, based in Terre Haute, arrested a Terre Haute man wanted on multiple charges. The arrest took place on State Road 63 near Margaret Avenue at 11:35 this morning. Officers spotted the man as a passenger in a gold Chevrolet van driven by a female. An Indiana State Police Trooper stopped the vehicle and the task force took the suspect into custody without incident. The female was not arrested and there will be no charges sought against her.

Lee Edward Bemis, age 25, of Terre Haute, IN. had been wanted by law enforcement since December 29, 2012. Bemis was alleged to have been driving a stolen vehicle from Vermillion County when he failed to stop for an Indiana State Police Trooper attempting to stop the stolen vehicle. Bemis drove the truck through a fence near 1st Street and 8th Avenue in Terre Haute and fled on foot toward the Wabash River. After an extensive manhunt, Bemis and his female accomplice, Kristina Gruner, were found and arrested. Bemis was released from the Vigo County Jail and failed to appear for his January 02, 2013 court appearance.

Bemis is currently held in the Vigo County Jail on an Indiana Department of Corrections parole warrant and a Vigo County warrant for Receiving Stolen Property, D felony and Resisting Law Enforcement, A misdemeanor, related to the stolen vehicle case.

Under the law, criminal charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
