Entry Description
INDIANAPOLIS— The Indiana General Assembly has begun to advance a number of proposals during the 2013 legislative session. State Senator Lindel Hume (D-Princeton) has authored a number of bills focusing on veteran’s assistance and funds for local schools.
Assisting our Hoosier veterans
In an effort to expand benefits to those who serve in the military and their families, Sen. Hume has co-authored Senate Bill (SB) 165 which would entitle the surviving spouse of a deceased veteran to a property tax deduction. Under this bill, the surviving spouse would be eligible as long as the veteran met the requirements for the deduction at the time of death and if the surviving spouse owns the property when the statement is filed. The bill would also give retroactive considerations to those seeking a deduction beginning March 2012. SB 165 has received unanimous approval from the Senate Homeland Security, Transportation and Veteran’s Affairs committee as well as the full Senate and awaits further consideration by the House of Representatives.
In order to assist returning veterans seeking work related to their military service, SB 290 would allow a military trained emergency medical provider to receive the necessary certification to work as an EMT. The bill gives the Emergency Medical Services Commission the ability to issue a license or certificate to a military service applicant who meets certain requirements.
School corporation capital projects fund
Under SB 291, local school corporations would have greater flexibility to use their funds. The bill would allow local school boards to use the school’s capital projects fund for maintenance services, snow removal, trash removal, mowing and lawn services, and pest control services. The amount of the funds transferred would be up to local school boards.
Sen. Hume represents Indiana Senate District 48 which includes portions of Dubois, Gibson, Knox, Pike, Spencer and Warrick Counties. For more information on Sen. Hume his legislative agenda or other State Senate business call 1-800-382-9467 or visit www.IN.gov/S48.
