Entry Description
I-74 Restrictions Resume Monday
For Cable Barrier Installation
MARION COUNTY – Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) contractors plan to resume installation of median cable barrier on I-74 west of Indianapolis beginning Monday, January 7.
Installation of the cable barrier system will require a left lane restriction on westbound I-74 between I-465 and Dandy Trail each day from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. A 40 mph speed limit remains in effect through the work zone. Walsh Construction, the project contractor, expects the cable rail installation to take approximately two weeks, but the daily work schedule is weather dependent.
Cable barrier systems are lines of highly tensioned cables between anchored posts in the medians of roads. They are designed to control cross-median crashes, which produce half of all severe-outcome accidents and nearly two-thirds of fatal crashes nationwide. When applied correctly, cable barriers can be a cost-effective system to reduce the frequency and severity of cross-median collisions and save lives.
Since INDOT began the program in 2005, cable barriers have been installed in a majority of the 60-foot-wide grassy medians on Indiana’s rural interstates.
