Indiana Department of Homeland Security employees volunteer with Habitat for Humanity

2012 Blitz Build gives back to the Henryville Community

On Thursday October 11, 2012, 10 IDHS employees volunteered to help with a blitz build for several families affected by the tornadoes on March 2nd. New Albany/Floyd County Habitat for Humanity coordinated with Habitat Indiana and Habitat for Humanity International to create “Raise the Roof Over Southern Indiana,” an ongoing project during the summer of 2012 to construct 10 houses in the Twin Oaks subdivision in Henryville. Families are projected to be moved into their new homes by Christmas 2012.

“It’s wonderful to see people from the agency give back to the community and to continue furthering fellow Hoosiers on the road to full recovery,” said IDHS Executive Director Joe Wainscott. “Partnering with Habitat for Humanity is a great opportunity to connect people from all around the state of Indiana to work towards a common goal of providing adequate shelter for families who lost their homes in the March tornadoes.”

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that helps to build and repair simple, decent, affordable houses with those who lack adequate shelter. Homeowners and volunteers build under supervision, while individuals, organizations, faith groups and corporations provide financial support.

IDHS Volunteers included:

Executive Director Joe Wainscott
Indiana State Fire Marshal, Jim Greeson, from Indianapolis
Director of Preparedness, Arvin Copeland from Westfield

CONTACTS FOR MEDIA ONLY: IDHS: John Erickson or Emily Norcross (317) 234-6713, pio@dhs.in.gov
