[ISP] Serious Crash on I-65

Entry Description

Jasper County-A multi-vehicle crash, yesterday, evening, caused one driver to be air-lifted from the scene and sent two others to the hospital.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Danielle Elwood revealed that approximately 7:29 p.m., yesterday, Friday, October 12th, a 2005 Pontiac driven by Keegan J. Hernandez, 18 of Crown Point, was north bound on I-65 at the 228 mile marker (this is approximately two miles south of the Demotte/Roselawn exit) in the construction zone when for unknown reasons he left the north bound lanes went off the roadway, through the median and came up into the south bound lanes of I-65.

Matthew Wolfe, 30 of Wilmette, Illinois, driving a 2007 Infinity was south bound I-65 in the left lane when the Pontiac hit its front end.  The Infinity lost control and came to rest in the left lane facing the wrong direction. 

Arthur Gendelman, 23 of Cincinnati, Ohio, driving a 2012 Nissan was south bound in the right lane when the Pontiac struck his vehicle after hitting the Infinity.  Gendelman’s Nissan came to rest on the outer shoulder.

Hernandez’ Pontiac came to rest thirty (30) feet west of the outer shoulder in the grassy area.  He had to be extricated from his vehicle and was air-lifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis with broken bones and non-life threatening injuries.  The Pontiac was totaled.  Hernandez was cited for Unsafe Lane Movement.

Wolfe and his passenger, Alexis Hausfeld, 27 of Springboro, Ohio, were taken to Saint Anthony’s Hospital in Crown Point.  Wolfe had large lacerations and other non-life threatening injuries and Hausfeld had broken bones and also other non-life threatening injuries. The Infinity sustained approximately $10,000 in damage.

Gendelman and his passenger refused medical treatment at the scene.  The Nissan sustained approximately $8,000 in damage.

All lanes south bound were reopened at approximately 9:50 p.m.  Everyone involved were wearing their seat belts.

Agencies assisting:  Indiana State Police Detective Chris Campione, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division Trooper Dale Turner, Keener Township Fire and EMS and Cooper’s Towing.

All criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
