Entry Description
Gary, Lake County-Indiana State Police Trooper John Holmen responded to a five vehicle crash on Interstate 80 at the 9.1 mile marker (just east of Grant Street) that sent seven people to the hospital.
Preliminary investigation revealed that, at approximately 7:00 pm, today, Saturday, August 4th, a 2006 Kenworth semi pulling a box trailer, driven by Kevin W. Frayer, 41 of Newport, Michigan was following traffic, when traffic became slowed/stopped. The semi rear ended a 2009 Hyundai, driven by Goldie L. Rister, 73 of Huntley, Illinois, which pushed the Hyundai into a 2010 Toyota, driven by Denise A. Piorkowski, 54 of Highland, Indiana, which was pushed into a 2007 Toyota, driven by Deborah J. Guerrero, 22 of Chicago, Illinois, which was pushed into a 2009 Toyota, driven by Anthony A. Navarrete, 27 of Chicago, Illinois.
The semi, loaded with 15,000 pounds of freight, is owned by STS Transportation out of Byron Center, Michigan. Frayer was cited for following too closely and log book violation. He was not injured. Nor was the load lost or damaged. The load was coming from Holland, Michigan headed to Kansas City, Kansas.
All parties that were transported to Methodist Hospital Gary sustained non-life threatening injuries.

*2009 Hyundai, Driver: Goldie L. Rister, 73 of Huntley, Illinois seat belt was in use.
Passenger: Clara Rister, 69 of Huntley, Illinois, and seat belt was in use.
*2010 Toyota, Driver: Denise A. Piorkowski, 54 of Highland, Indiana and seatbelt was in use.
*2007 Toyota, Driver: Deborah J. Guerrero, 22 of Chicago, Illinois and seatbelt was in use.
Passenger: Martha Rueda, 53 of Chicago, Illinois, and seat belt was in use.
*2009 Toyota, Driver: Anthony A. Navarrete, 27 of Chicago, Illinois and seatbelt was in use.
Passenger: D’Angelo Nieves, 8 of Chicago, Illinois, and seatbelt was in use. (Family on scene)
West bound left lanes were closed an hour and half for removal of vehicles, clean up and attending to injured.
Agencies assisting: Trooper Nedal Nabhan with the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, Caruther’s Towing and Bert’s Towing Services.
All criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. |
