Entry Description
Gary, Lake County- Master Trooper Brian White and Russell Hayes responded to a semi rollover that caused the ramp from Interstate 65 north bound to Interstate 80 west bound to be partially closed.
Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2003 Freightliner pulling a trailer, driven by Robert A. Durham, 62 of Chicago, Illinois was on the ramp going too fast to negotiate the curve portion when the left side of the trailer came up off the pavement. Durham was loaded with 42,000 pounds of Budweiser Beer that was not properly secured inside the box trailer. The speed and load shifting caused the semi and its trailer to rollover onto its passenger side. The semi was owned by AM Express out of Escanaba, Michigan. The load was coming from Columbus, Ohio headed to Chicago, Illinois.
Durham was taken to Methodist Hospital Gary with non-life threatening injuries.
Durham was cited for Speed Too Fast to Avoid a Collision, Securement Violation, and was placed out of service for Log Book Violation and cited.
