Swine Health at 2012 Indiana State Fair

As this year’s show season winds down, awareness and sensitivity to animal health is heightened within the swine community. Because illness has been reported in several counties, the Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) is increasing surveillance of hogs at the Indiana State Fair.


Your help in monitoring animal health, overall, during your time at the State Fair will make this a good event experience for everyone.



The temperature will be checked for all swine at check-in to the State Fair. Refusal to allow Fair staff to check a pig’s temperature will result in automatic disqualification.

Any hog with a body temperature of 105.0 degrees F or higher will be rechecked. Hogs with a verified temperature of 105.0 F or higher will be denied entry to the barn and must be removed from the grounds.



During the duration of the Fair, swine temperatures will be rechecked, as well as visual inspections for any clinical signs. Hogs that reach a temperature of 105.0 F or higher must be removed from the grounds immediately.


If you see any of the following clinical signs in your swine during the Fair, contact the Swine Barn Manager, who will coordinate with the on-duty veterinarian:

  • elevated temperature (above 104.0 F)
  • respiratory signs such as coughing, thumping, sneezing, breathing difficulties
  • depressed or lethargic
  • off feed



As at any show, be sure to practice good biosecurity:

  • Avoid direct contact/handling of other swine
  • Do not share equipment (buckets, brushes, etc.)
  • Wash your hands after handling animals
  • Do not eat or drink in the barns
  • After returning home, clean and disinfect all gear (show box, hoses, bucket, boots, etc.)
  • Separate pigs returning home and observe


If you notice these signs in your pigs within 10 days of returning home, contact your herd veterinarian.

If you, or anyone in your family, has flu-like symptoms during or shortly after the fair, contact your physician or county health department.
