I-69 Exit Signs and Mile Markers are Changing
Updated Signs Reflect Additional Miles from Interstate Expansion

FISHERS, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) today presented its More Miles, New Numbers public awareness campaign to inform community leaders, first responders and motorists about significant changes coming soon to highway signage along Interstate 69 in central and northern Indiana.

This morning’s presentation at the Fishers Chamber of Commerce was the second of several meetings planned in upcoming weeks in counties along the I-69 corridor north of Interstate 465 to the Michigan state line.

The longest contiguous new highway construction project occurring anywhere in the U.S. is underway now in southern Indiana, extending I-69 to eventually link Evansville and Indianapolis.  A new 65-mile section between Evansville and the Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC Crane) opens in late 2012.  An additional 27-mile section of I-69 from NSWC Crane to Bloomington is scheduled to open in 2014.

“This project substantially lengthens the route I-69 travels in Indiana, which requires renumbering of mile markers and exit ramps in central and northern Indiana,” said Sam Sarvis, Indiana Department of Transportation Deputy Commissioner and Major Project Manager.  “INDOT must make these changes to comply with nationwide standards.”

To determine the new designation of a familiar milepost or exit, simply add 200.  For example, Exit 0 will become Exit 200; Exit 10 becomes Exit 210, etc.

Exit signs and signs one mile before the exit ramp will display both the new designation and the familiar previous exit number.  INDOT plans to replace existing mile markers with signs that reflect only the new designation.

Renumbering begins in August and will be complete in the fall of 2012.

INDOT will maintain the dual exit signage for a minimum of three years, through October 2015.  Thereafter, the previous exit numbers will no longer be replaced if damaged.  These previous numbers will be removed by October 1, 2017.

Deputy Commissioner Sarvis said, “INDOT recognizes the significance of this renumbering.  That’s why we will keep the dual signage of exits in place for up to five years.  We’re also holding informational meetings in each county where renumbering will occur.  We are confident these steps will minimize confusion and help travelers and businesses adapt to the new numbers.”

The interstate will remain open throughout the renumbering process.  There may be limited lane restrictions as new mile markers and exit numbers are posted, but INDOT will minimize any impact on traffic flow.

INDOT will update the public on renumbering progress via news releases and social media, and will post project details online at www.i69indyevn.org.
