Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (July 25, 2012) – State Sen. Mike Delph (R-Carmel), NASCAR driver Tony Stewart and the Office Depot Foundation today helped launch the “Back-to-School Celebration” aimed at better preparing local students for the 2012-2013 school year by equipping them with backpacks filled with essential classroom supplies.

A total of 6,000 new backpacks in seven designs were donated by the Office Depot Foundation to non-profit organizations and schools in the Indianapolis area, 350 of which Delph designated for Robey Elementary School in Clermont located in the Southern portion of Senate District 29.

The "Back-to-School Celebration” featuring Delph and Stewart began at 3:30 p.m. today at an Office Depot store located 4200 South East St., Indianapolis, IN 46227.

“Having the right school supplies is an important step in doing good work and feeling confident about heading back to the classroom,” Delph said. “But sometimes the cost of stocking up on school supplies places a real burden on families. With five school-age daughters, I totally understand how the costs can quickly add up. That’s why for the past three years, I’ve looked forward to participating in the Office Depot Foundation’s National Backpack Program where we can help kids start school on the right foot and relieve some stress for parents.”

This year, the Office Depot Foundation will donate 400,000 backpacks in all, the most ever in a single year. By the end of 2012, the Foundation will have helped more than 2.9 million children since the inception of the National Backpack Program in 2001.

“Many caring individuals work hard to make this backpack program a success,” Delph said. “I want to thank Lisa Wilburn from Clermont Christian Church for coming today and accepting backpacks on behalf of Robey Elementary School students. Mary Wong, president of the Office Depot Foundation, and Tony Stewart also deserve a lot of recognition and credit for helping kids at Robey for the third year in a row.”

At 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 28, Delph will help hand out the backpacks filled with pencils, pens, crayons, erasers, rulers and other school supplies at Robey Elementary School’s Back to School Bash, located at Clermont Christian Church, 9204 Crawfordsville Road in Indianapolis.

According to Delph, any remaining backpacks after Saturday’s Back to School Bash will be donated to North Wayne Elementary School in Marion County.
