Entry Description
Steuben County, IN—The Indiana State Police investigated a two vehicle crash this morning on State Road 1 at the intersection with Metz Road that injured four people, one of which was flown to a Fort Wayne hospital with internal injuries.
According to Master Trooper Doug Kelly, at approximately 10:15 am, a 1996 GMC van driven by Jon D. Phelps, 70 of Hamilton, Indiana was traveling eastbound on Metz Road, approaching the intersection with State Road 1. Phelps failed to stop his van for the posted stop sign and drove into the intersection and into the path of a northbound 2004 Range Rover driven by Dean J. Troyer, 22 of Topeka, Indiana.
As a result, the Range Rover struck the GMC broadside which caused both vehicles’ airbags to deploy. Phelps, who was the lone occupant of the van, suffered internal injuries and was initially transported to Cameron Hospital in Angola before being transported to Parkview Regional Medical Center by Samaritan. Troyer and his two passengers, Lyndon J. Yoder, 20 of Goshen, Indiana and Matthew L. Slabach, 20 of Topeka, Indiana all suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene. All four were said to have been wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash which reduced the severity of the injuries incurred.
Kelly was assisted at the scene by the Steuben County Sheriff Department along with Angola Fire and Rescue. |
