LaPorte County-This is an update to the information previously provided regarding the ongoing investigation of the shooting of Daniel Sherrod Jr. as he attempted to disarm a Michigan City police officer on the evening of June 20th.  Preliminarily it was reported Sherrod had been shot in the area of the abdomen.  This was reported to state police investigators that arrived at the scene after Sherrod had been transported to a nearby hospital and then by helicopter for immediate life saving medical attention.  As the investigation has continued indications are Sherrod was shot on the back, close to his left arm, while he and the officer were fighting for control of the weapon. 

The investigation is still ongoing and investigations of this nature can take several weeks or longer to complete.  Once the investigation is completed it will be submitted to the prosecuting authority for review and action as deemed appropriate by the prosecutor’s office.

In accordance with long standing state police policy specific information related to this investigation will not be discussed while the investigation is ongoing.  Once the investigation is completed it will be submitted to the local prosecutor. All questions related to the investigation will also be referred to the LaPorte County’s Prosecutor’s office.

All criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
