Traffic Restrictions
on State Road 1
For Chip Sealing Operations
North of Hagerstown
WAYNE COUNTY, Ind.—The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will chip seal a segment of State Road 1 between US 36 and Jones Road, just north of State Road 38. Maintenance crews will chip seal northbound and southbound driving lanes and shoulders beginning Monday, June 4.
On Monday and Tuesday, INDOT crews plan to chip seal the shoulders of SR 1 in both directions. Mainline driving lanes are scheduled to be chip sealed on Wednesday and Thursday. This schedule is subject to change based on daily progress and weather.
Chip sealing is a cost-effective pavement preservation technique using liquid asphalt and crushed stone to prevent deterioration of the existing pavement surface. It provides waterproofing, crack sealing and improved friction for a fraction of the cost of new asphalt pavement.
The liquid asphalt takes some time to set up in order to hold the stone in place, which requires temporary lane closure. Drivers should be alert for work zone signs and follow flaggers’ instructions. Drivers are cautioned to drive slowly through the moving work zone to avoid loss of traction on any loose stone and prevent throwing any stone or liquid asphalt.
INDOT crews use as little stone as necessary to achieve a quality surface, prevent waste and minimize dust. The stone used is Indiana limestone, which by nature is dusty. If crews do not use enough stone, the liquid asphalt can bleed through to the surface.
The chip seal will be followed by a fog seal. A fog seal is a light layer of asphalt material applied to the top of the chip seal to help lock in loose stone. Fog sealing also makes the roadway black, which makes pavement markings more visible to drivers.
