End Date: 5/16/2012End Time: 11:59 PM
Entry Description
The Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission named five semi-finalists for the upcoming vacancy on the Court of Appeals of Indiana.  The following attorneys and judges applied for the position, were interviewed in public at the State House, and have been named as semi-finalists for the Court of Appeals:
Ms. Abigail Lawlis Kuzma, Indianapolis
Ms. Patricia Caress McMath, Indianapolis
Hon. Rudolph R. Pyle, III, Madison Circuit Court 1
Mr. Joel M. Schumm, Indianapolis
Hon. Robert R. Altice, Jr., Marion Criminal Division 2

A position on the Court of Appeals of Indiana will be available when Judge Carr Darden retires this summer.  Judge Darden was named to the Court of Appeals by Governor Evan Bayh in 1994. His retirement creates an opening on the fifteen-member court in the fourth district.  Information on the districts can be found online here

The seven members of the Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission are filling the upcoming vacancy.  The Commission includes three lawyers elected by their peers and three citizen members appointed by the Governor.  Chief Justice Brent Dickson chairs the Commission.

Second interviews of the five applicants will take place on June 4-5, 2012 at the Indiana State House, Room 319.  After the public interviews and Commission deliberations in an executive session, the Commission will publicly vote to send the three most qualified names to Governor Mitch Daniels.  The Governor makes the appointment.

The interviews are open to the public.  To respect the interview process and remove distractions for the candidates the Court has the following guidelines in place for the press and public:
  1. Enter and exit the room only between interviews.
  2. Set-up tripod and other equipment for video and still cameras between interviews.
  3. Refrain from moving about the room during interviews.
  4. Only ambient lighting will be permitted.  Artificial lighting such as flashbulbs and frezzi lights shall not be used.
  5. No mult box/audio equipment will be provided.  Individual lavalier microphones will not be attached to applicant lapels. Wired or wireless microphones can be placed on the table in front of the applicant prior to the start of the interview.
  6. Questioning of the applicant during the interview is reserved for the Judicial Nominating Commission.
  7. At the applicant’s discretion, members of the public or the media may interview him or her before or after the Commission interview outside the interview room.
  8. Members of the audience are requested to refrain from all other activities that might distract from the interview process.
