Entry Description
June 11-15, 2012
Westfield High School
322 Main Street, Westfield, IN
When disasters or local emergencies strike, youth need to be prepared. They should be part of the solution. Operation Safeguard is a 5-day immersive learning summer leadership academy for central Indiana high school youth. This innovative leadership academy prepares teens to help themselves and others in a disaster. Originated from the ripples of an Eagle Scout project, Operation Safeguard also teaches participants how to begin service projects that share their new knowledge and benefit their communities.
The FREE academy seeks to promote resilience for children and youth in disasters by training Indiana youth in essential principles of disaster response. Students will interact with a variety of public safety personnel with emergency response and homeland security responsibilities at local, state, and national levels. The hands-on training and exercises will help equip teens to be active and productive participants in disaster preparedness and response. The camp culminates in a full-scale mock disaster exercise, where students perform “victim” search, rescue, triage and treatment in realistic setting with input from seasoned first responders. A graduation ceremony will be held on the final day.
Academy graduates are equipped to bring their new skills and the message of preparedness to their families and communities.
Applications must be turned in by June 1, 2012. To sign up, visit www.in.gov/dhs/3762.htm. |
