Indy 500 Alert: New Ramps at I-74 and Crawfordsville Road
Race Fans Encouraged to Follow the Signs during May

SPEEDWAY, Ind. – As festivities kick off this week, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is alerting motorists traveling to “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” of new ramp configurations where Interstate 74 and US 136/Crawfordsville Road meet the I-465 loop.  I-74 no longer ends at Crawfordsville Road, as the former cloverleaf exit has been redesigned since last year’s race to provide safer, higher speed ramps connecting I-74 with I-465.  To view an illustration of the new interchange, please see the imaged attached to this release or visit

During the month of May, INDOT encourages visitors to follow the signs.  On race day, INDOT’s Traffic Management Center will advise race fans of the safest and quickest route to the track via lighted dynamic message signs.  Motorists who choose to exit I-465 or I-74 directly into Speedway should follow the signs to the new US 136/Crawfordsville Road ramps, which are controlled by signalized intersections.  INDOT, Indiana State Police and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway have identified routes to the track for motorists approaching from each direction, which are available at

Construction continues on US 136 and Crawfordsville Road between Girls School Road and Cunningham Drive.  Two lanes of traffic will be open in both directions with one lane at I-465 designated for turning to access the interstate.  Beginning Thursday, May 10 at 9 p.m., eastbound traffic on Crawfordsville Road will be redirected to new pavement on the south side of the roadway.  Westbound traffic will be shifted to allow for construction to continue on the north side of the roadway and the east side of High School Road, which will be restricted to a single lane in each direction.

US 40/Washington Street has two lanes open in each direction with a median crossover to place both directions of traffic on the south side of the roadway between High School Road and Glen Arm Road.  High School Road is scheduled to be restricted to a single lane in each direction and shifted to the west side of the roadway beginning Monday, May 14.

The Indiana State Police will be patrolling these and other work zones in unique pickup trucks made to look like INDOT construction vehicles.  The trucks are being used in addition to traditional marked and unmarked state police vehicles to enforce safe driving in work zones throughout the state.

Drivers can learn the locations of work zones and highway restrictions by calling INDOT’s TrafficWise at 1-800-261-ROAD (7623) or viewing an online map at  INDOT also provides regular updates via Twitter and Facebook.  For more information, visit
