Entry Description
STATEHOUSE (April 27, 2012) – State Sen. Mike Delph (R-Carmel) announced today that Bobby Plump – the Milan High School basketball team member who made the game-winning basket to secure the state tournament title in 1954 – will join the high school basketball tourney debate in Milan.
“Bobby Plump is a Hoosier legend,” Delph said. “He understands the passion that is fuelling this debate. I am very excited about the meeting in Milan and expect to hear powerful testimonies from local residents and other members from the historic team who just love the sport and Indiana traditions.”
Delph and Indiana High School Athletic Association Commissioner Bobby Cox are touring the state to gather citizen opinions on the former single-class basketball tournament and the current multiclass format.
The next stop on the tour is Milan, home of Milan High School. In 1954, the school became the smallest to have won a state championship in the U.S. after the men’s basketball team defeated Muncie Central in the final game.
“I’m very interested to hear what the Milan community has to say about this ongoing discussion,” Plump said. “I look forward to joining Senator Delph and appreciate him bringing this issue to my hometown, where people care so much about the spirit of the game.”
This meeting will be a reunion for some members of the 1954 Milan Indians basketball team, with Ray Craft, Rollin Cutter, Roger Schroder and Gene White also planning to attend.
The Milan town hall is at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1, at Milan Junior and Senior High School, located at 609 North Warpath Drive.
