Gary, Lake County-Indiana State Police Trooper Anthony Potesta responded to a single vehicle crash, early this afternoon, where a Gary woman died later at the hospital.

Preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 1:01 p.m. (Central Standard Time), a blue 1992 Jeep, driven by Leslie D. Thompson, 34 of Gary, was west bound on the Toll Road in the far right lane, at the 11.9 milemarker (this is approximately one mile west of the Grant Street exit), when she began to change lanes to go into the middle lane.  Another vehicle, who was west bound, in the far left lane also began to change lanes to go into the middle lane at the same time; Thompson jerked her Jeep to the right to avoid the other car and lost control.  The Jeep rolled over multiple times.  The Jeep never made contact with the other vehicle.

Thompson had to be extricated from the Jeep.  She and her two passengers were taken to North Lake Methodist Hospital in Gary.  Thompson succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.  Her passengers, Joseph Davis, 43 of Gary, suffered a laceration to his head and broken ribs and Janel White, 33 of Gary, had lacerations.

Thompson was wearing a seat belt but the severity of the crash caused multiple blunt force trauma.  She tested positive for alcohol and was in her first trimester of pregnancy.

Family has been notified.
