[s31] Sens. Merritt, Miller, Rep. Smith Join Governor in Proclaiming Today: ‘Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day’
Start Date: 3/30/2012
End Date: 3/30/2012
Entry Description

STATEHOUSE (March 30, 2012) – State Sen. Jim Merritt (R-Indianapolis) and Rep. Milo Smith (R-Columbus) commended Gov. Mitch Daniels for proclaiming today, March 30, “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day”  in honor of Hoosiers who served in the Vietnam War from 1961-1975.

During the 2012 legislative session, Smith joined Merritt in sponsoring Senate Concurrent Resolution 34, asking the governor to establish March 30 as “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day.”

“Recognizing ‘Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day’ is a great way to pay homage to those who served during a difficult time in our country’s history,” Merritt said. “Many veterans endured great scrutiny for their service, so it’s only fitting that we honor these Vietnam soldiers now, crediting them for the great sacrifices they made for our families, state and nation.”

This proclamation serves as a reminder to Hoosiers that more than 1,532 Indiana soldiers lost their lives and 300,000 were wounded during the Vietnam War.

“I am so pleased that the governor has set aside this day to honor our brave soldiers who fought in the Vietnam War,” said Smith. “We can never give enough thanks to those who have fought to protect our freedoms. Even though it’s been 36 years since our last Vietnam veterans returned home, I want to express my sincerest appreciation for all the sacrifices they made. Their bravery and courageous service in Vietnam helped preserve the freedoms that all Hoosiers continue to enjoy today.”

This afternoon, State Sen. Pat Miller (R-Indianapolis) — a co-author of SCR 34 — joined Merritt at the American Legion Mall Vietnam War Memorial in downtown Indianapolis to celebrate the sacrifices Vietnam War veterans made.

“I agree it is time we honor those from every state, especially our own veterans, who did not receive the welcome home from Vietnam they deserved,” Miller said. “I am proud our state legislators came together to right a wrong that our Vietnam veterans have borne for many years.”

On March 30, 2009, Congress proclaimed a national “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day” to encourage Americans to pay respect with ceremonies and activities that promote awareness of the sacrifices made by the veterans who served in Vietnam.
