Rep. Karickhoff Sponsors Student Friendly Initiative
Senate Bill 182 Moves to Governor’s Desk

STATEHOUSE—Rep. Mike Karickhoff (R-Kokomo) sponsored Senate Bill (SB) 182, which will make it easier for college students to transfer their credits. The bill will require the Commission for Higher Education to create a common course numbering system for transferable credits.

“This is a student friendly initiative that promotes higher education in our state,” said Rep. Karickhoff.  “Students lose valuable time at college trying to determine whether their credits are transferrable, this will help resolve that issue and get more students graduated in four years.”

SB 182 would increase the amount of credits that can be transferred among state colleges and universities. It states that a person who holds an associate degree is considered to have met at least 30 semester credit hours of the general education requirements for a bachelor’s degree.

It further requires state educational institutions to accept an associate degree from another state education institution as credit toward a related bachelor’s degree.

SB 182 has passed through both the Senate and House and now moves to the Governor’s desk to await his signature.

If signed by the Governor, state educational institutions will have until May 15, 2013 to create a statewide transfer general education core.

“Sponsoring this legislation in the House was a great privilege and this is the type of bill that the majority of our members can all agree on,” said Rep. Karickhoff. “It is aimed at reducing cost and increasing productivity. Most importantly, I hope this bill allows our students to graduate in a reasonable time and become valuable members of our state and job force.”
