INDOT Prepared for Winter Weather

Drivers encouraged to plan ahead and use caution

GREENFIELD, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) Greenfield District is prepared for the winter weather arriving today in east central Indiana.

INDOT trucks have been pre-treating state roads, US routes and interstate highways in the Greenfield District.  Pre-treating the road surface with brine helps to establish an initial barrier between the road surface and any ice accumulation, which helps INDOT to clear roads during and after a snow.  It also helps to prevent slick spots where conditions might otherwise suddenly create frost-covered roads, especially on bridges and overpasses.  Crews will switch to spreading salt and/or other anti-icing agents based on current and predicted temperatures, precipitation levels and roadway conditions.

A full callout of 179 truck drivers is being deployed ahead of the snow from units in the Indianapolis, Tipton, Greenfield, Albany and Cambridge City Subdistricts.   Drivers will work to keep routes clear until precipitation subsides and road conditions are safe.  If necessary, a second shift will replace drivers at midnight and work into Friday.

INDOT encourages drivers to use caution and plan ahead for Thursday evening and Friday commutes.  Allow extra travel time to safely reach destinations and drive appropriately for road conditions.

  • BLACK ICE – Roads that seem dry may actually be slippery and dangerous.  Take it slow, especially at intersections, ramps, bridges and shady areas – because of the potential for ice.
  • DRIVE SLOWLY and carefully to avoid rear-end collisions and sliding on curves.
  • ALLOW GREATER DISTANCE behind the car ahead; less traction requires more stopping time.
  • BRAKE EARLY, break slowly, never slam on the brakes; if you have anti-lock brakes, press the pedal down firmly and hold it; if you don’t, gently pump the pedal.
  • AVOID ABRUPT MANEUVERS – Steering, braking and accelerating abruptly can cause loss of control.
  • MAINTAIN GOOD VISIBILITY, stay alert and be aware of other vehicles around you.

Once again this winter, drivers are able to check road conditions before departing.  During snow and ice events, will be updated to let drivers know if road conditions are good, fair or difficult. The information will also be available by calling 800-261-ROAD (7623).
