Sen. Charbonneau, Reps. Soliday

(STATEHOUSE)– Sen. Ed Charbonneau (R-Valparaiso) and Reps. Ed Soliday (R-Valparaiso) and Greg Simms (D-Valparaiso) honored Valparaiso University’s retiring president Dr. Alan F. Harre today at the Indiana Statehouse.

“Dr. Harre’s dedication to Valparaiso University extends beyond the campus and reaches throughout the community,” Charbonneau said. “For nearly 20 years, President Harre worked passionately as a leader impacting the lives of those who met and worked with him.”

Legislators recognized Harre’s multiple accomplishments including the erection of new facilities such as the Center for Arts, Kallay-Christopher Hall and the Christopher Center for Library and Information Resources. Under his leadership, three new Master of Science programs, an international study program in China and a university chapter of Phi Beta Kappa honor society were established.

“I am proud to sponsor this concurrent resolution honoring Dr. Harre, who has done so much for our community,” Soliday said. “He has led Valparaiso University to new heights while maintaining a remarkable rapport with the students and faculty of the University.”

Dr. Harre’s work reaches beyond the campus of Valparaiso and into the community. He served two three-year terms on the Board for the Greater Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce where they named him Distinguished Community Leader. He is a founding member of the Porter County Community Foundation where he served for more than 10 years, co-founded Rebuilding Together – a nonprofit group that annually helps to make local homes safer and more comfortable for needy families in Valparaiso – and is a member of the Quality of Life Council where he served as Chairman and was the 2007 recipient of the Council’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

“Dr. Harre’s contributions to Valparaiso University were simply unparalleled,” Simms said. “Under his leadership, the university has experienced unprecedented growth in diversity, academic success and prestige within the community. He is an invaluable resource, and will be truly missed.”

Sen. Charbonneau represents Senate District 5, which includes Starke County and portions of Porter, LaPorte, Marshall, Jasper, Pulaski, and St. Joseph counties.

Rep. Soliday represents House District 4, which includes Jasper, Lake and Porter Counties.

Rep. Simms represents House District 10, which includes portions of Porter County.
