State panel discusses compliance with national sex offender law
Sentencing Policy Committee meets at Indiana Women’s Prison

STATEHOUSE – Indiana’s compliance with landmark federal sex offender legislation was discussed when the Sentencing Policy Study Committee met Thursday at the Indiana Women’s Prison. The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act was enacted by Congress in 2006. Sen. Brent Steele (R-Bedford), chairs the committee.

“According to the Legislative Services Agency, Indiana is already ahead of the game in implementing various components of the law, which creates a national sex offender registry,” Steele said.  The law is named in memory of Adam Walsh, the young son of America’s Most Wanted host John Walsh, who was abducted and murdered in 1981. His killer has never been found. According to the U.S. Justice Dept., more than 2,100 children go missing every day.

Steele said truth in sentencing issues were also discussed during the meeting, during which members of the commission toured the facility.
