FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(STATEHOUSE)- Senate Bill 6, authored by Senator Brent Steele (R-Bedford), passed the Senate today by a vote of 50-0. The bill is aimed at protecting children from sex offenders through lifetime parole and GPS monitoring devices.
“Too often, sex offenders are released from prison, supposedly rehabilitated, only to repeat their crimes or commit worse offenses,” said Steele. “Statistics show that sex offenders are four times more likely than non-sex offenders to be arrested for another sex crime after being discharged from prison.”
This bill helps target convicted child molesters and dangerous violent sexual predators who register their address at one spot and live at another.
Senate Bill 6 stipulates that a person at least 18 years of age convicted of child molestation or determined to be a sexually violent predator the first time will be placed on life time parole and those determined to be sexually violent predators the first time of those with a second conviction of child molestation will be required for the remainder of their lifetime parole to wear a GPS monitoring device at all times.
“The only way to help prevent predators from striking twice is to ensure their whereabouts are known by law enforcement agencies,” said Steele.
Senator Steele represents Senate District 44, which includes Jackson and Lawrence counties, as well as portions of Monroe, Orange and Washington counties.
