Nugent fires a shot at unneeded government bureaucracy
(STATEHOUSE)—State Sen. Johnny Nugent (R-Lawrenceburg) fired a shot at unneeded government bureaucracy by supporting a bill that targets the duplicate filing of paperwork after handgun sales.
Senate Bill 18, co-authored by Nugent, would eliminate state requirements that gun dealers forward to the Indiana State Police paperwork already filed with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
“This is just one small piece of government we can eliminate,” Nugent said. “There’s no reason to fill out this form twice.”
Nugent noted that testimony in favor of the bill made it clear this was a good decision.
“Among those who spoke in committee, Indiana State Police informed us they currently throw this paperwork away after 30 days,” Nugent said. “Clearly, there is no reason why we should require these small business owners to send these forms to the state police if they just throw them away. It’s a waste of paper, postage and personnel. It is as unneeded burden on everyone involved.”
SB 18 passed the full Senate by a vote of 49-0. It will now move to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
Nugent serves Senate District 43, which includes Dearborn, Ohio, Ripley, Union, Franklin and Jennings Counties.
