Alting Encourages Citizens to Take Part in Major Moves Discussion
Governor to be in Lafayette Thursday to discuss his Major Moves proposal

STATEHOUSE—State Senator Ron Alting (R-Lafayette) is encouraging citizens to attend or watch discussions with Governor Mitch Daniels on Thursday.

Daniels will be in Lafayette to answer questions from citizens regarding his transportation proposal, known as “Major Moves”.  He will hold a question and answer session with students on the campus of Purdue University at the Stewart Center at the corner of State Street and Memorial Mall at 3:30 p.m.  He will then appear on WLFI Channel 18 from 5:30 to 6:00 p.m. to answer questions sent in by viewers.

“I strongly encourage citizens in Tippecanoe County to attend, or tune in to Channel 18 and listen, to see what the governor has to say,” Alting said. “I know this is a very important subject and has the potential to be a great thing for our state.”

This transportation initiative is included in House Bill 1008 and would give the governor the authority to lease the northern Indiana toll road to a private company.  The governor has announced that if approved, the state would enter into such an agreement for 75 years in exchange for $3.85 billion.  The private entity would be in charge of maintenance of the toll road and this large sum of money would finally allow Indiana to complete road projects that have been delayed for years. These projects would lead to thousands of new jobs for Hoosiers.

This would guarantee $173,226,447 in funding for projects in Tippecanoe County .

“I want citizens to ask questions, listen to his answers and make up their own minds,” said Alting.”  “I am still undecided on the issue myself and would very much appreciate input from constituents.”

Citizens may contact Alting's office by writing to 200 West Washington Street , Indianapolis , IN 46204 ; calling 1-800-382-9467; or e-mailing him at S22@IN.gov

This legislation has already passed the House of Representatives and is currently being heard by the Senate Appropriations Committee.
