Committee to discuss rash
of fatal accidents involving semis
STATEHOUSE – Vehicle crashes involving commercial motor vehicles – particularly semis – will highlight discussion of an Interim Committee on Transportation Matters at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Room 431 of the Statehouse.
Sen. Tom Wyss (R-Fort Wayne), chair of the committee, had asked for this particular study last April following a week when nine people died in northern Indiana crashes involving semi tractor trailers. The victims included the daughter of State Sen. Timothy Skinner (D-Terre Haute).
“Just the volume of commercial truck traffic alone on our interstates today is reason enough for this study,” Wyss said.
In addition to Wyss, the committee consists of Sens. John Waterman (R-Shelburn), Ryan Mishler (R-Bremen), James Arnold (D-LaPorte), Robert Dieg (D-Mount Vernon) and James Lewis (D-Charlestown); State Rep. Clyde Kersey (vice chair, D-Terre Haute) and State Reps. Dale Grubb (D-Covington), Vern Tincher (D-Riley), Cleo Duncan (R-Greensburg), James Buck (R-Kokomo) and William Davis (R-Portland).
Also on the committee’s agenda Tuesday is study of feasibility of an inland port in Indiana.
Sen. Tom Wyss is from Fort Wayne and represents District 15. He is chairman of the Homeland Security, Transportation and Veteran Affairs Committee in the Indiana Senate.
